Fibre Optic Strain Measurement in Structures
Prof M J Joyce, Dr P Wang, Dr Y Zhang, Dr G J Turvey
The field of smart structures represents a new area of structures research activity within the department. Attention is being focused on the measurement of bending strains in simple beam structures by means of optical fibre sensors bonded to their outer surfaces. The research has enabled a number of the difficulties of measuring strain using such techniques to be resolved. It is intended to develop this work to embedded sensors in composite structures and to combine it with the actuating capabilities of piezo-electric ceramics.
Vibration Analysis of Laminated Beams, Plates and Shells Incorporating Piezo-Electric Materials
Mr N Mulcahy, Dr G J Turvey
The aim of this research is to develop analysis models for vibration sensing and control of fibre composite components. The current focus of attention is on laminated beam response.
