Undergraduate Engineering at Lancaster University
Here at Lancaster, we like to think we’re a bit different to other engineering departments.
We’re one of only a handful of general engineering departments in the country, housing all the individual disciplines that we teach in one building. We find this reflects the multi-disciplined approach you will find in industry, where a growing demand for a new breed of engineer has emerged, and employers now require engineers who can integrate their knowledge within multidisciplinary project teams.
Friendly and collaborative
Our friendly, informal and collaborative atmosphere helps those who work and study here achieve success. Class sizes are small - no lectures with 250 people - meaning you are a name and not a number here! You’ll get to know your lecturers and support staff personally and our ‘open door’ policy means you can call in for help and advice at any time. You’ll have support from lab technicians to assist with your practical and project work and because we keep our student numbers small there’s no overcrowding of facilities or queuing to use the labs.
Flexible Learning
We offer our students real flexibility and choice during their degree. Our common first year means that all students - no matter what discipline - follow a similar timetable based on a firm grounding of the fundamental principles of modern engineering before choosing their specialisation in their second year. Students can also upgrade from the three-year BEng degree to the four-year MEng after their second year (dependent on performance), choose to study for a year abroad at one of our partner institutions, or spend a year working in industry earning valuable experience (and cash!).
Innovative teaching and research
We have world-leading academics, who are involved in state-of-the-art research which influences the material that we teach. We adopt innovative teaching methods including the pioneering use of creative project work and a design-build-test approach to learning, helping our students learn interactively and gain hands-on experience. We are an International Partner in the CDIO™ initiative, which seeks to revolutionise engineering education.
